It currently has 2 Medical Officers (MO), 5 Research Officers (RO), 1 Medical Assistant (MA) and 2 Study Coordinators (SC)
The Head of Unit, Dato Dr Ghazali bin Ismail who is a Gynaecologist actively conducts both IIR and ISR. He also motivates his specialist and MOs in conducting research.
Every year, more than 5 trainings and courses are conducted, and this include Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Introductory Course to Clinical Research (ICCR), Basic Statistics Course, Basic Research Methodology, Introduction and Awareness of NMRR and GCP Refresher Course
CRM began placing 2 Study Coordinators in November 2015 to facilitate the increasing amount of ISR conducted at HSIJB
In 2017, CRM provided funds for the construction of a new CRC office in view of the existing CRC that has been fully occupied.
CRM’s study coordinators work closely with the Pharmacy Department for drug reconstitution, IP storage and IP temperature monitoring
CRC HSIJB conducts Good Clinical Practice Workshop (GCP) in almost every year since 2014. From this course, new potential investigators have been identified every year from different disciplines.

Hospital Taiping

CRC Hospital Taiping began functioning in April 2011 in a room located in the CME building. Dr. Cheah Wee Kooi, Head of Medical Department and Consultant Endocrinologist, was appointed to lead the centre. Initially he was assisted by only one Research Officer. Currently, the CRC team consists of a medical officer, a research officer and a pharmacist. In December 2011, CRC Hospital Taiping underwent upgrading works, with funding from National CRC, to occupy the whole of the east wing of the CME building. The dawn of 2012 saw a newly refurbished CRC which consists of the CRC office, a computer room, 3 trial clinics, patient waiting lounge, a procedure room, a meeting room, a server room, an investigational product storage room and a document room with controlled security access.

As part of the CRC Network of the Ministry of Health (MOH), the role of CRC Hospital Taiping is to support quality and ethical research to improve patient outcomes. CRC Taiping also coordinates and facilitates Industry-Sponsored Clinical Research conducted in Hospital Taiping.

Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah

Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) was built in August 2000, finished in March 2007, and started full operations on July 29, 2007. It is located about 6 km from Alor Setar city center and covers 28.33 hectares of land. The hospital cost RM 552 million to build and consists of four main buildings: one for medical support services, one for non-medical support, the main hospital building, and the ward block where patients stay.

HSB operates in two locations: the new Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital and the older Alor Setar Hospital (HAS).

Medical Services & Facilities
At first, the hospital offered 10 main medical specialties and 28 subspecialties. Over time, it expanded to 17 main specialties and 45 subspecialties, including heart care, kidney treatment, surgery, and more. The hospital also has an advanced IT system to manage patient records, which was fully implemented in 2008. This system was later introduced at HAS in 2018.

HSB plays an important role as a referral hospital, helping 12 health clinics in Kota Setar and Pendang, 8 hospitals in Kedah, Perlis, and Penang, and 11 private hospitals.

HAS is mainly used for treating inpatients with medical conditions such as infectious diseases, surgeries, orthopedics (bone and joint issues), lung diseases, and psychiatric care. In 2020, rehabilitation and palliative care wards were also added to HAS. One advantage of HAS is that it has many empty wards that can be used in case of emergencies or disasters.

By 2020, HSB had 41 wards, including 5 critical care units, with a total of 1,108 beds (910 at HSB, 198 at HAS). The hospital has 18 operating theaters and 12 delivery rooms for childbirth. A new Daycare Treatment Center was planned to open in 2021 at HAS after upgrading one of its buildings.

HSB also offers Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM), including acupuncture and traditional massage for stroke and chronic pain patients. This service has been available at HAS since 2010.

Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah

Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) in Klang, Selangor, began its operations in April 1985 and was officially inaugurated on 2 September 1985 by His Majesty Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj. Named in honor of Tengku Ampuan Hajah Rahimah, the hospital initially operated as Hospital Besar Tengku Ampuan Rahimah before being renamed HTAR in 1993. With over 800 beds and 20 clinical departments, it quickly became a major referral center for districts including Sabak Bernam, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, and Sepang.
Over the years, HTAR has grown into one of Malaysia’s most vital healthcare institutions. Today, it accommodates 1,094 beds, ranking as the second busiest hospital for inpatient admissions and the country’s most active outpatient facility. Beyond patient care, HTAR has established itself as a hub for medical education and research. It is home to an in-situ medical teaching facility affiliated with the University of Malaya and the Management and Science University. In 2006, the hospital further strengthened its commitment to innovation with the establishment of its Clinical Research Centre (CRC), a one-stop center dedicated to ethical and high-quality clinical research.

HTAR also prioritizes patient-centered initiatives. In 2015, it launched a patient navigation program to support breast cancer patients, significantly reducing the treatment default rate from 11% to just 4% within a year. This initiative reflects HTAR’s dedication to not only treating illnesses but also ensuring comprehensive support for its patients.

With a legacy built on excellence, innovation, and compassionate care, HTAR continues to evolve as a leader in Malaysia’s healthcare system—committed to saving lives, advancing medical knowledge, and providing quality healthcare to the community

Hospital Seberang Jaya

Clinical Research Centre Hospital Seberang Jaya (CRC HSJ) was officially launched in 2011. Since then, CRC HSJ has embarked on multiple collaborations, both locally and internationally to promote, assist and conduct clinical research in line with Malaysian government’s aspiration to be a research nation. CRC HSJ is actively carving its role to be a key research leader. As part of the CRC-Network nationwide, CRC HSJ has conducted numerous training workshops like Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Introduction to Clinical Research, and Research Methodology. There is also ongoing research consultations throughout the year to assist our colleagues in conducting research and clinical registries. Our core duties include facilitating Industry Sponsored Research (ISR), Investigator Initiated Research (IIR), and Bioavailability and Bioequivalence (BABE) studies. CRC HSJ provides research support and training to three other satellite hospitals over Seberang Perai (Figure 1), which caters the public health needs for approximately 900,000 populations. Our excellent medical facilities and staffs directly contribute to the identification of pools of suitable and potentially eligible patients whom can be recruited into clinical trials. Furthermore Hospital Seberang Jaya is a referral hospital, with service provision from major specialties and many subspecialties, namely Neurology, Geriatrics, Nephrology, Respiratory medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, General Surgery, General Orthopaedics, Emergency & Traumatology, and Dentistry, providing a good mix of patients from different disease areas.

Hospital Seberang Jaya is one of the few public/Ministry of Health (MOH) hospitals that provide acute thrombolysis management for acute ischaemic stroke.
