13 April |8:00 am - 5:00 pm UTC+8

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Assoc Prof Dr Siti Hamimah

Meet Assoc Prof Dr Siti Hamimah, Director of Institute of Medical Molecular Biotechnology at Faculty of Medicine, UiTM. She holds a PhD from Imperial College London where she studied how bile acid affects heart cells signaling and function at molecular level. After her PhD, she continues her work in understanding how the most hydrophilic bile acid, ursodeoxycholic acid protects cardiac cells against reactive oxygen species. Currently, she is interested on endocrine disruptor compounds (EDCs) and understanding how EDCs affect the normal programming heart cells.

Assistant Professor Dr. Lee Siew Keah

Meet Assistant Professor Dr. Lee Siew Keah, a faculty member of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia. She obtained her Bachelor of Health Sciences (Biomedicine)(Hons) with the award of first-class honours in year 2006 and then her Ph.D degree in year 2011 in Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Her early research work focused the roles of genetic and environmental influences in prenatally programmed hypertension. She also explored the role of melatonin as a novel therapeutic agent in treating cardiovascular disease. In addition to publication in peer-reviewed journals, these research works earned three Anugerah Sanggar Sanjung Merit Awards from USM, Young Investigator Fellowship award from Asia Pacific Society of Hypertension, European Investigators Accommodation Grant from European Society of Hypertension as well as Travel Grant Award from International Society of Hypertension.

In recent years, she expanded her research into the impact of concurrent use of food/herbal medicine particularly tea catechins, and conventional medications especially anti-hypertensive drugs. She believes that her research would give valuable insights and awareness on the risk the therapeutic failure or toxicity effect among habitual tea consumers who are taking anti-hypertensive medication concurrently.

Siew-Keah believes that research and academic teaching are inseparable and synergistic. She believes that contributions and experience in teaching & learning activities, administrative responsibilities and in professional society are equally important, and she strives to be a well-rounded educator. She won two Congratulatory Awards for excellent teaching performance in year 2018. In addition to the extensive faculty administrative appointments, she has been actively involved in local and international professional societies.

Professor Chim Lang

Meet Professor Lang, a consultant cardiologist and clinical pharmacologist and Professor of Cardiology and Head of the Division of Molecular and Clinical Medicine at University of Dundee. He trained in both cardiology and clinical pharmacology in the UK and in the USA, where he was a Merck Fellow at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, and a Fulbright Scholar at Columbia University, New York. His patient-oriented research takes a multidisciplinary approach to the understanding of the pathophysiology of heart failure and cardio-metabolic diseases. He leads an integrated cardiovascular research laboratory dedicated to translational research and in the development of biomarkers and novel treatment strategies in patients with cardiovascular diseases. A wide range of funding bodies including the British Heart Foundation, MRC, Chief Scientist Office, Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, Tenovus and the European Commission (FP-7 and Horizon 2020) funds his research.

Professor Lang has published over 250 papers and has an h-index of 57. He is and has been involved in the editorial boards of several scientific journals including Cardiovascular Therapeutics (Joint Editor-in-Chief), Heart (Associate Editor), Clinical Science(Associate Editor) and Current Clinical Pharmacology. He is Chair of the Heart Failure Working Group of NHS Tayside.

Dr. Jasmine Hau Yuan Wen

Meet Dr. Jasmine Hau Yuan Wen, a research fellow and the head of Cardiac Informatics Cluster at UTM-IJN Cardiovascular Engineering Centre, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She is also a senior lecturer at the School of Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She received both Ph.D. degree and master’s degree in electrical engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2009 and 2005, respectively. Dr. Hau’s research interests are in the design of multi-processor systems-on-chip (MPSoC) /networks-on-chip (NoC), from electronic system level (ESL) modelling to Register Transfer Level (RTL), as well as field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation. From there her research interests have spread into the field of cryptographic and data security application, biomedical application such as arrhythmia classification and medical imaging processing, as well as ADHD/autism assessment. She has published more than 50 papers in peer reviewed international journals and conferences, and several book chapters. She is also a member of the IEEE.

Ms. Debbie David

Meet Ms. Debbie David, Deputy CEO and Department Head of Patents at Advanz Fidelis IP Sdn Bhd, an award-winning specialist intellectual property corporation in Malaysia.
